The interdisciplinary project "animal emotionale II - Existential Feelings, Psychopathology, and the Range of Evolutionary Explanations" provides a systematic and empirical investigation of existential feelings, incorporating philosophical, psychiatric, and neuroscientific perspectives, and critically examines the explanatory power of evolutionary accounts of emotions and existential feelings. The project is funded by the VolkswagenFoundation within the initiative "key issues in the humanities". Funding began 2009 and lasts for three years.

Principal investigators are PD Dr. Susanne Erk (Charité Berlin), Prof. Dr. Achim Stephan (University of Osnabrueck), Prof. Dr. Dr. Henrik Walter (Charité Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Sven Walter (University of Osnabrueck).
